Recently I went to Dakar, Senegal to make a French version.
Every city, country, culture has its own peculiarities and Dakar was no different. For one, people in public are not really keen on the camera. If I had walked around by myself as a foreigner, trying to coerce people in my broken French to participate in this documentary project, I would have gotten nowhere. Luckily I had assistance from the Senegalese filmer/fixer Cheikhou Diarra who basically rounded up all his family, friends and acquaintances. And THEIR family, friends and acquintances... These people were beautiful, warm and hospitable and the first days we were able to complete almost half of all ages. But, as with previous projects, the really old people were hard to find. And care homes for the elderly -the places I could always rely on to provide people between 90 and 100- don't exist in Senegal. The city of Dakar is not a place for old people, I found out. Many of the elderly live out in the villages, we heard, but we didn't know whom or where... We exhausted all options and connections but two ages eluded us until the end. After 10 days of crazy Dakar traffic I had to leave Senegal with number 98 and 99 missing. Luckily these two were later found and filmed by the man who had helped me to realize this project. And so, one month later, I am able to share the finalized film with the world. Thank you beautiful people of Dakar and beyond, you are now in my heart forever! Jeroen Wolf/imaginevideo.nl PS Senegal is a former French colony and the official language is French. However the most widely spoken language is Wolof, an African language also spoken in Gambia and Mauritania . If you're interested, I am working on another version in Wolof.
